The International Securities Exchange (ISE) is the first regulated securities exchange to build and operate cloud-based disaster recovery infrastructure as part of disaster preparedness requirements established by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) recent Regulation Systems Compliance and Integrity (Reg SCI) initiative.

ISE migrated its options exchanges, ISE and ISE Gemini, to the Amazon Web Services (AWS), Inc. Cloud in advance of the SEC’s November 3, 2015 deadline. ISE Mercury, ISE’s recently launched third options exchange, also leverages AWS Cloud.

“The opportunity to build a disaster recovery site on a cloud environment challenged our technology team to deliver innovative solutions that would ensure the quality and integrity of the exchange, while leveraging the benefits of cloud infrastructure. AWS is a leader in cloud computing and working with their team enabled us to implement our vision for the anywhere exchange,” said Robert Cornish, Chief Technology Officer of ISE.

ISE and AWS worked together to integrate requirements such as advanced security features and processing of multi-cast data feeds to replicate the exchange infrastructure on the cloud. Implementation of a redundant, production-ready securities exchange on the cloud provides ISE with greater availability, scalability, and improved time to market for new implementations compared to a traditional disaster recovery datacenter build out.

“As a Reg SCI entity, ISE is charged with protecting the integrity of critical securities’ market infrastructure, and we are pleased to have worked with them on the migration of their disaster recovery operations to AWS. The AWS Cloud infrastructure has been architected to be one of the most flexible and secure cloud computing environments available today, and ISE and its members can benefit from a reliable and scalable platform that enables them to deploy applications quickly and securely when needed,” said Scott Mullins, head of worldwide financial services business development, Amazon Web Services, Inc.

ISE Options members are connected to ISE’s cloud disaster recovery site through their existing disaster recovery connections.
