Numbers of foreign firms in China declines for first time

Chinese-flag

The total number has fallen from 178 to 170 in the last 12 months, according to figures published by the Chinese Ministry of Justice.

The number of offices fell from 232 to 225. This is the first time that there has been a decline since foreign firms were allowed to open representative offices in the 1990s.

Mergers, tie-ups and the economy

Causes are down to mergers and also the decision of some firms to shut offices there. The Australian firm Allens, for instance, decided to close down as a result of its tie-up with Linklaters.
