HMRC doubles inquiries into self-assessors

The number of taxpayers whose financial affairs HM Revenue & Customs investigated in the past 12 months has almost doubled, in line with the growing haul from such self-assessors.

In fact, self-assessment inquiries by the department hit 237,215 people last year, up from around 119,000 in 2011-12, according to figures seen by The Daily Telegraph.

The 99% increase suggests that HMRC has made good on its promise of doing ‘everything’ in its power to close in on the approximately £35billion of tax that is lost annually.

The figures reportedly add that, since 2011-12, tax investigations into the self-employed have quadrupled, while the number of annual prosecutions has jumped seven-fold in three years.

Accountants say that HMRC has toughened its approach to tax collection, partly evidenced by it adding 200 new investigators in the past three years, taking the team’s total number to 1,600.
