Don’t be conned by ‘e-mails from HMRC’

Nottingham accountant Serena Humphrey is urging businesses to be vigilant of fraudulent e-mails.

The owner of F Word financial training company believes companies are continuing to fall victim to the messages, claiming to be from HMRC, in many cases losing tens of thousands of pounds.

She said: “HMRC will never e-mail you to notify you of tax rebate, or ask you to disclose any personal information or bank details.

“If in doubt, don’t open e-mails from HMRC and definitely don’t click on any links.”

Ms Humphrey also had the following advice regarding the reported threat of pending cyber attacks.

“Check with your IT provider to make sure that all your software and security is up to date, and be extra vigilant with e-mails and attachments from people you don’t know.

“If you don’t recognise it, then never open an attachment or click on a link.”
