Microsoft’s CEO comp could hit $147 million

Microsoft’s Nadella received “competive pay” package that could eventually be worth over $147.5 million.

Microsoft’s Satya Nadella may be on the hot seat with women for his recent comments on pay, but his compensation as CEO of the software giant could eventually be worth more than $90 million and he could eventually receive far more over for hitting performance targets.

Nadella received a compensation package that could eventually be valued at least $84.3 million, Microsoft said Tuesday in its annual proxy. That includes $919,000 in salary, $3.6 million bonus and stock valued at $79.8 million. He gained another $5.8 million from vested shares.

Nadella — who replaced long-time chief executive and new Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer in February — received the bulk of the stock award — about $59.1 million — tied to his appointment as CEO, Microsoft said. Another $13.5 million was granted as a “special retention” stock award before his promotion, when he served as executive vice president of Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise team.

Nadella, 47, drew the wrath of many women following an appearance at an Oct. 9 conference, where he suggested women should not ask for pay raises, saying that they should have “faith that the system will give you the right raise.” Nadella later said the backlash was humbling, a learning experience and lamented his remarks. He conceded the statement was wrong.
