Mashreq Bank has insisted that it does not engage in cold calling of residents, according to the bank’s UAE head of retail banking.

Despite the practice being outlawed by authorities in the UAE since 2011, there have been numerous instances of banks calling customers and prospective customers offering loans and credit cards.

Mashreq Bank’s head of retail banking, Farhad Irani, told Arabian Business that the bank does not engage in this practice, adding that the lender’s extensive marketing campaigns mean they have enough new customers to satisfy their needs.
“No. Cold calling is not allowed. We can’t do tele-calling and approach customers. But, we have AED40 million ($10.8 million) worth of advertising and we do a lot of search engine marketing,” Irani added.

“In any given month we get almost 6,000 leads that come into the bank, which are followed up on. They come in through the internet, our call centre, through Snapp (mobile app), and through walk-ins at the branches. So we work on the leads and we work extensively on member referrals, where existing happy customers recommend other friends,” he said.
