Jones Day sits just 13 points behind Skadden; Baker & McKenzie makes large gains

For the fourth straight year, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom holds the strongest law firm brand, according to one survey, but how long will that reign last?

According to the 2015 U.S. Law Firm Brand Index by Acritas, Skadden still holds the top spot, but the margin between the firm and second place has lessened considerably. While second place Jones Day finished 36 points behind Skadden in 2013, Acritas says the margin is now just 13 points between the two firms.

Furthermore, the other firms in the pack are increasing their brands as well. Baker & McKenzie now takes third place in the index after a 15 point jump, overtaking Kirkland & Ellis for the spot. K&L Gates, meanwhile, sits in eighth place with a score of 52, but a score that high would have finished in third in 2013.

Overall, Acritas notes, firms are putting more emphasis on their branding. On one hand, that means that firms are beginning to see the value in aligning the firm to customer interests. But on the other, Acritas says, the stronger field makes it tougher for any single firm to stand out from the pack.
