JPX: Trading Overview for FY2014 & March 2015

Japan Exchange Group released the trading overview (preliminary estimates) for FY2014 & March 2015.

Cash Equity Market

  • In FY2014, trading volume for domestic TSE 1st Section stocks (excluding preferred stock) was 601.47256 billion shares, the second highest on record, and trading value was JPY 592.1505 trillion, the fourth highest on record.
  • Domestic ETF trading volume was 6.09 billion units (daily average: 24.78 million units), trading value was JPY 37.7 trillion (daily average: JPY 153.4 billion), both all-time highs.
  • Trading volume for domestic Mothers stocks was 23.3 billion shares (daily average: 95.08 million shares), an all-time high, and trading value was JPY 32.6 trillion (daily average: JPY 132.8 billion), the second highest on record.
  • REIT trading value was JPY 9.2 trillion (daily average: JPY 37.6 billion), an all-time high.

Derivatives Market

  • In FY2014, total derivatives trading volume was 312,980,772 contracts, exceeding 300 million contracts for the second consecutive year and reaching the second highest level on record.
  • Total derivatives trading value was up from the last fiscal year to JPY 2,381 trillion, the second highest on record after the FY2007 all-time high.
  • Nikkei 225 mini trading value was JPY 333 trillion, an all-time high.
  • TOPIX futures trading value was JPY 281 trillion, an all-time high. Monthly trading value for TOPIX futures also reached an all-time high of JPY 48 trillion in March.
  • Trading volumes for mini-TOPIX futures, TSE REIT Index futures, Nikkei 225 VI futures, DJIA futures, and mini 10-year JGB futures all increased sharply from last year to renew all-time highs.
  • Trading volume for the night session was 101,087,319 contracts, and the ratio of the night session reached 32.3%, both all-time highs.
  • In March, trading volume for the night session was 9,200,373 contracts. The ratio of the night session was 27.7%.
  • For TSE REIT Index futures, monthly trading volume was 29,647 contracts, an all-time high.

The cash equity market is operated by TSE, while the derivatives market is operated by OSE.
