Over £87,000 lost to binary options scams every day in the UK

forex scam
  • Over £87,000 lost to binary options scams every day in the UK
  • Under 25s are six times more likely to trust an investment offer made via social media, compared to those aged 55+
  • Online overtakes phone as most common contact method for investment fraudsters

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is today urging the public to be vigilant to the threat of online investment fraud. Fraudsters offering investments in binary options, contracts for difference (CFDs), forex and cryptocurrencies* (such as Bitcoin) often promote themselves online and via social media channels, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. They typically promise high returns and use images of luxury items, like expensive watches and cars, to entice people to invest in their scams. After someone has invested, they distort prices on their website, tie people in with extreme pay-out clauses and even close customer accounts, refusing to pay back their money. This call comes as the regulator reveals that last year investors lost £87,410** per day to binary options scams.

This rise in people being targeted online means that the profile of investment scam victims is changing. While historically over 55s have been most at risk to investment fraud, the FCA’s latest study conducted as part of its ScamSmart campaign, found those aged under 25 were six times (13%) more likely to trust an investment offer they received via social media, compared with over 55s (2%). Action Fraud figures reinforce this trend, showing that under 50s are significantly more likely to fall victim to a binary options scam versus other types of investment fraud (34% v 21%).

More than one in five (23%) respondents said that online customer testimonies and reviews increase their trust in an investment company. Yet, scammers are known to create highly professional looking online investment platforms that feature fake customer reviews, logos, and statements, to lure in prospective investors. A further one in ten (11%) said they wouldn’t conduct any of the listed checks at all, such as checking whether the firm was regulated by the FCA or registered with Companies House, before parting with their money.

The FCA’s ScamSmart campaign encourages those considering investing to check its dedicated website (www.fca.org.uk/scamsmart). The site features an online tool, the Warning List, which allows users to find out more about the risks associated with an investment and view a list of firms the FCA knows are operating without its authorisation. For the first time, the FCA has seen more users checking the Warning List after being approached with an investment offer online rather than over the phone***.

Binary options investments allow consumers to make bets on the expected value or price of a stock, commodity, currency or index. On 3 January 2018, binary options became a regulated investment product, meaning that all firms trading in binary options will need to be authorised by the FCA. Since then, the FCA has published a list of 94 firms without FCA authorisation that it understands to be offering binary options trading to UK consumers.

Mark Steward, Director of Enforcement, FCA, comments:

‘As people have become more sceptical of investment-related cold calls and consumer habits have changed, we have seen investment fraud moving online and to social media.

‘While their websites and profiles appear to be professional, they are all too often run by fraudsters who fix prices and pay-outs, or in some instances don’t really place trades at all, before disappearing with innocent investors’ money.

‘Before investing online, check you know who you are really dealing with and check if they are authorised by the FCA. Find out how to avoid scams on the ScamSmart website, and if in any doubt – don’t invest.’

Nick Hewer, who is supporting the campaign, added:

‘The amount being lost every day to online investment fraud, such as binary options scams, is staggering. It’s vital for all those on social media to be extra cautious about engaging in any conversations or with adverts that relate to quick-wins or guaranteed returns, especially with individuals or companies you do not know.

‘Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. If you are offered an attractive investment out of the blue, be suspicious, check the FCA’s Warning List and seek impartial advice. Better still, if you get an email or message about an investment from someone you don’t know, just delete it.’

To reduce the chance of falling victim to investment fraud, the FCA advises consumers to, at the very least:

  1. Reject unsolicited investment offers whether made online, on social media or over the phone.
  2. Before investing, check the FCA Register to see if the firm or individual you are dealing with is authorised and check the FCA Warning List of firms to avoid.
  3. Get impartial advice before investing.

Suspected investment scams can be reported to the FCA at www.fca.org.uk/scamsmart or via their contact centre on 0800 111 6768.

  1. *Cryptocurrency is not generally regulated by the FCA, so consumers do not have the protections offered by the UK’s financial regulatory framework. Derivative instruments, such as futures and contracts for difference, which reference cryptocurrencies may however be regulated investments.
  2. **Figures from Action Fraud.
  3. ***From August-December 2017, the FCA received 6,891 enquiries on the Warning List tool regarding investment offers made online, compared to 3,654 over the phone.
  4. All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2064 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 23rd – 27th November 2017. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all UK adults (aged 18+).
  5. On 1 April 2013, the FCA became responsible for the conduct supervision of all regulated financial firms and the prudential supervision of those not supervised by the Prudential Regulation Authority.
  6. The FCA has an overarching strategic objective of ensuring the relevant markets function well. To support this it has three operational objectives: to secure an appropriate degree of protection for consumers; to protect and enhance the integrity of the UK financial system; and to promote effective competition in the interests of consumers
  7. From 3 January 2018, UK firms offering binary options must be authorised by the FCA. This means that:
    1. firms will be supervised by the Financial Conduct Authority
    2. binary options will be subject to the regulatory regime for investment products
    3. individual complaints can be referred to the Financial Ombudsman Service
    4. eligible consumers will have access to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme
  8. The FCA also works closely with The European Securities and Markets Authority, which is currently consulting on whether to ban the sale of binary options to retail investors.
  9. New ScamSmart advertising will launch 29 January 2018. The advertising will include radio, online video and banner ads, paid search and media partnerships. www.fca.org.uk/scamsmart

    There are many binary options companies which are not regulated all around. Most of these offshore companies are not supervised, connected or affiliated with any of the regulatory agencies such as the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), National Futures Association (NFA), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Please If you have lost a reasonable amount of money to an alleged trusted broker, contact wealth recovery now on ;
    info AT wealthrecoverynow DOT co for assistance on how to get your money back.

    I honestly didn’t believe binary options is a scam company until they took all my money and denied me access to withdraw. Reading reviews here made me realized I was not the only victim. I deposited £67,000 with the hope of getting more. Scam company, I had to hire the services of a recovery expert/consultant jeremywyatt@consultant.com to help me get my money back from them and I have successfully recovered £65,000 from them.

    I got scammed by 53 Capital Trade, broker Helen Kinski. Only lost £17000 which is minimal compared to what others lost after reading this column, But what I have just found out which is worse that my personal details like my bank account, card numbers, phone and passport details have all been sold on the black market. This is a heads up to everyone else to change your details immediately after you realized you’ve been scammed because the after effects are on-going.

    I lost a whooping sum to this godforsaken unregulated company as well as part of the biggest investment mistakes I ever made. No calls or emails , no feedbacks on withdrawal request until: admin@ malaikaconsultant. com put my life right back on track. Make no mistake investing in any of these binary option companies, if you do get to withdraw a minimal amount , it’s a bait to increase your out of pocket investment which you’ll most likely and normally never get back

    Beware of Binary options scam
    I initially invested a total sum of $95,000 over a period of 18 weeks. My bonus/profit was $170,000, every attempt to make withdrawal failed and I was instructed to make another deposit of $25,000 before I can make withdrawals which I did. Up till now I’m still unable to make withdrawals and all attempt to contact broker has failed. This is very pathetic and I advise everyone to desist from binary options generally. I did a due diligence test before investing with them but guess what I ended up getting burned. This is to create awareness, not everybody can be as lucky as I was. I’m saying this because I was able to recover my funds through the help of Mr Kevin McCann. Thanks to me Kevin McCann he’s a private investigator and wealth recovery expert…Contact him on email km2632636@gmail. com for more enquiries. And he will guide you on steps to take and get back all you have lost. Am very happy to share this because i love seeing someone smile again.

    I remember when this happened to me. I lost a good amount of money the first time I blew my account (not willing to say the amount). I was absolutely devasted and depressed about it that I couldn’t feel anything emotionally at the time that it happened. I came to the conclusion that I had to give up signal services and analysis from other traders in order to be consistently profitable when trading. Here were the steps that I took to eventually recover from my loss
    It’s a good idea to try to recover lost money. If you’re chasing your losses
    There can be many reasons for the loss.
    * Do not learn well
    * Make a mistake
    * Your greed
    * NOT a good strategy
    * Trading psychology
    * Money management
    * etc

  24. Anderson Tony

    It isn’t really easy though because as a beginner, I lost a lot of money as also i fell into the net of fraud options brokers and they ran off with my money over $45,000. I noticed that after investing, I was unable to withdraw my invested money back and after a while I was unable to log back.

    It was such a nightmare and i thought I had lost everything i had invested until i met Albert who put me through the recovery process. He is very professional and reliable. I can’t thank his enough.

    I continued trading options with the help of a certified funds manager. That’s the best way to make options trading easy as he/she would help you grow your investment portfolio rapidly as he understands the markets economics better.

    There are a lot of reasons, but this is actually the number one reason most traders lose money on TRADE. They insist on adjusting their strategy to have as low a probability of taking a loss in the short term as possible. This results in them unintentionally maximizing the amount of the loss.Most traders wind up doing the opposite of what my uncle did, though it’s just as dumb. They want the probability of losing to be low. But just like the low probability of winning the lottery means the amount won is high, so the low probability of losing in a TRADE strategy means the amount lost is high.You know after i got enlighten by cyberspace101.com they have the help on how to recover any lost fund the are just the hacker you looking for .my uncle and i are so greatful
    The fact remains, CMC just floated for £700m, FX Pro is aiming for 17 times earnings (unknown) but they are Cyprus based, so we have no idea what they will be listed for. That said, there UK operation netted £2m net profit, that’s retained my friends, out of the expenses woods gains.
    You still asking why Forex traders lose. These companies have the means to destroy you. You simply can’t beat them. As arbitrageurs we have dedicated a lot to beating FX brokers, in the end you are more likely to get banned if you fly to high.
    Because their broker is a cheater. 80% of traders trade through bad brokers, for example, skipping a stoploss, or making a so-called slippage, that instead of running the order at their price, they run a few pips worse, and that is always a big downside. Furthermore, they have large spreads or expand them on a message or at night. Then it is very difficult to win on such a broker.

    “I was defrauded for 90,000 GBP by FTO CAPITAL. I was distraught, and I
    started leaving bad reviews everywhere about them. Then someone contacted me
    on Facebook to say they have heard about someone who can help get your money back. T
    he thing is, I’d been scammed by another company as well. However, I thought I should give it a try.
    Alex, who managed my case, was brilliant. He told me what I needed to do and say, and it worked out.
    After around six weeks, I got all of my money back. These are the good guys!!!
    I would recommend them to everyone who has been defrauded. Thanks so much! “”

    I’m impressed, I have to admit. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s both equally educative and
    entertaining, and without a doubt, you’ve
    hit the nail on the head. The problem is something too few folks are speaking intelligently about.
    I’m very happy that I came across this in my search for something regarding this.

    Can the victims of scam get their money back? Yes, if you have fallen victim to scam from an unregulated investment platform or any scam at ll then are eligible to recover what was stolen from you and this can only happen if this is reported to the right people. With the right approach and with evidence, you will get what you lost back. Those behind these unregulated platforms will likely want to sell the idea that what happened to your investment was an unfortunate occurrence when in reality what happened was theft via elaborate means. If you are a victim or you know any one who is a victim of these occurrences, you should know there are people who can help you. Simply search (corecrypto tech-cryptocurrency recovery) on google just the way it is in that bracket. It is never too late if you have the right information, your sanity can be restored.
