Former IASB senior technical director to establish new Deloitte IFRS research initiative

Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has appointed Alan Teixeira as global director of international financial reporting standards (IFRS) research.

As a leading technical expert in developing global accounting standards, Alan will lead a new Deloitte research initiative to help the firm and its clients better understand IFRSs, their development and implementation by companies worldwide.

Alan joins Deloitte with over 10 years’ experience with the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), most recently as its senior technical director overseeing the standard setters’ research and development programme. Prior to his role at the IASB, Alan was the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants’ general manager of standards and quality assurance, responsible for exposing and endorsing IFRS when it was first brought to New Zealand. Alan holds a PhD in accounting and finance from the University of Auckland and is a member of the FCA Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand.

He said: “Having been at the centre of standard setting for many years, I know how incredibly difficult it is to develop global standards, given different cultures, regulations and environments. IFRS is embedded across a significant number of countries, so any accounting change can potentially have a huge effect on so many people and organisations throughout the world.

“Deloitte has always been an eager contributor to the standard setting process and I am proud to join a team at the forefront of the IFRS debate. I am confident our research programme will further enhance Deloitte’s knowledge and expertise on financial reporting matters to best serve our clients. I look forward to bringing new challenge and a different perspective to the firm.”

Stephen Griggs, Deloitte UK’s managing partner for audit, said: “The IASB recognises there needs to be a shift in how they set standards, and more time is being spent on researching and trying to understand financial reporting problems. Any view that Deloitte has on IFRSs could have global implications, so it’s important we are arming our people with the best insights when advising our clients. Alan is a significant addition to our global IFRS technical team, and we believe he will boost our IFRS offering through his wealth of expertise and insight.”
