Research published by The Lawyer has revealed that Herbert Smith Freehills is now the UK law firm with the most FTSE 100 client relationships – 39 FTSE 100 companies in total.

The firm is also the most popular adviser to FTSE 100 companies on High Court and Court of Appeal cases in England. It was instructed on 11 cases brought by FTSE 100 companies with reported judgments between January 2012 and July last year, substantially more than any other firm.

The research puts Herbert Smith Freehills success down to the fact that the firm is providing quality advice across all practice areas. Herbert Smith Freehills is often instructed on corporate and litigation mandates for FTSE majors, as well as many other contentious and non-contentious matters, which is clearly resulting in deep relationships with these important clients.

The FTSE is the index of the UK’s biggest public companies, traded on the London Stock Exchange. Lawyer Market Intelligence (LMI) has found that Herbert Smith Freehills advises 39 of the top UK 100 listed companies. Eight of the 39 are financial businesses, seven are from the energy and resources sector and six are leading manufacturing companies.

Scott Cochrane, Global Head of Corporate at Herbert Smith Freehills comments:

“We’ve always been very focused on the corporates, so it doesn’t surprise me that we’re scoring well here. We have, over the last two few years, been directing our strategy towards building and strengthening our relationships with clients, so that they turn to us when things get tough.”

“Clients want a law firm which can provide them with the full range of services across the globe, from helping them to get out of trouble to restructure, buying or selling a business, so firms have to re-align how they think about those clients and engage with them in a more holistic way. We want to hold the clients’ hand at every point in their business cycle.”

Justin D’Agostino, Global Head of Dispute Resolution at Herbert Smith Freehills and the firm’s joint Regional Managing Partner for Asia and Australia comments:

“It’s particularly pleasing to be the most popular adviser to FTSE 100 companies on High Court and Court of Appeal cases in England, as well as the law firm in the UK with the most FTSE 100 client relationships.  We are very grateful to all our clients for entrusting their most significant matters to us.  As ever, it is all down to the quality of our team and the strength and depth of our bench both in London and across our global practices.”
