Ikea is to create 1,300 new British jobs by the end of 2018 as it opens three new outlets in Sheffield, Exeter and London.

The Swedish flat pack furniture giant said the retail roles will see the total number of staff employed in the UK rise to 11,700.

A total of 350 jobs will be created in Exeter and 500 in Greenwich, where new stores are slated to open next year.

Another 480 roles will be created in Sheffield, where Ikea will set up shop this summer.

Speaking at a “groundbreaking” ceremony in Exeter, Ikea’s UK boss Gillian Drakeford said: “As we continue to expand, we’re delighted to bring investment to new areas across the country and create new opportunities for local communities.

“This year we are celebrating Ikea’s 30th anniversary in the UK, and we are seeing more demand from customers for more stores in areas closer to where they live.”

In November, Ikea said that UK revenues rose 8.9% to £1.72 billion in the year ending August 31, its fifth consecutive year of sales growth.

Once opened, the new stores will leave Ikea with 22 outlets in the UK. The retailer also has four smaller format stores.

Last year Ikea reiterated its commitment to investing in Britain following the Brexit vote, with Ms Drakeford saying at the time : “We believe there is a lot of opportunity in the UK.

“We’ve been evaluating our newest stores and formats and yes, absolutely, there will be more stores. We will continue to invest in the UK.”
