PROCESS

Through comprehensive analysis using M&A data from Mergermarket’s league tables and a judging panel of industry veterans, Mergermarket’s M&A Awards is highly-regarded among the industry for the impartial process in finding a winner. Take a look at this year’s shortlist here.

Stage 1: M&A data analysis

Mergermarket M&A deal data, an industry standard source for advisory league tables, has been used to generate a shortlist for each of the award categories. Each shortlist represents a list of top firms for that category, based on deals announced between 1 October 2013 to 30 September 2014 (Q4 2013 to Q3 2014 inclusive).

Each category ranks advisers based on their domestic and cross-border M&A mandates. Firms are only included on deals where they are correctly listed on the Mergermarket deal record in the database. This ranking method produces a list of top firms (or “shortlist”). Lapsed or withdrawn deals are excluded, with the exception of any award category for legal advisers.

Stage 2: Written pitches

Shortlisted organisations are then invited to submit a pitch of 300 words maximum for each nominated award outlining why they qualify to win.

Stage 3: Judging panel

Once all written submissions have been received, an independent panel of judges will review the entries within each category. In addition to the written submission, Mergermarket will provide judges with a list of relevant M&A deal data. Each judge votes for one winner in each category in private.

The judges will assess the following in their considerations:

• The strategic nature of the deals worked on
• The complexity of the deals worked on, including but not limited to the deals’ cross-border/jurisdictional nature, their structure and negotiation to completion
• The financing requirements of the deal
• The groundbreaking or novel nature of the deals.

These criteria will allow the awards to underline the importance of the number and sizes of transactions announced, as well as recognise particular deals, companies and people within a wider geographic or market context. Our aim is to establish a preeminent awards event for European M&A – based on principles of veracity, accuracy and insight.
