50% of accountants that work in UK practices believe that technology will render 80% of their day to day duties obsolete by 2030, according to a recent poll by Accountancy Practice Jobs.

In a four-part online poll, 714 accountants reported that web-based software had already significantly reduced the day to day duties required for a typical accountant. They also recorded that they expected 80% or more of their current duties to become obsolete by 2030. Interestingly only 15% of practice owners were concerned about the viability of their business despite the above findings.

66% of accountants reported that recent developments in online software, technology and automation had a positive impact on their business. 54% of the same people said it has increased the amount of work they had been able to do and that jobs will be created albeit in different areas of the business or with a differing focus.

“Whilst most accountancy practice owners and managing partners acknowledge that technology and automation are reducing the day to day duties, a very few number are concerned by this. Research shows that the vast majority of accountants welcome the advancements and envisage it would allow them more time to spend advising clients and growing their client based, rather than battling with spreadsheets and producing reports. More and more accountancy practices are looking for a broader range of skill sets in their appointments, they are looking for business development skills, relationship builders and candidates who can enhance their brand as well as crunching numbers and producing a set of accounts” Leon Campbell, Operations Manager at apjobs.co.uk reports.
