Accounting giants press for seat at G20 table

big four

The Australian federal government allegedly accepted sponsorship of more than $US300,000 from three of the accounting sector’s ‘big four’ for a seat at the table of a high profile tax summit in Tokyo ahead of this year’s G20 talks in Brisbane, according to Fairfax Media.

The summit on international tax dodging took place in early May, with a letter from Treasury ahead of the event reportedly offering firms the opportunity of registered places and speaking roles in return for significant payments.

Treasury confirmed this offer was taken up by Deloitte, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers as well as the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Fairfax said, with other representatives at the event upset with the level of access the big firms received.

”It is inappropriate that Treasury has sold speaking spots and extra representation to companies that advise corporations on tax minimising — to a conference on tax reform,” Mark Zirnsak, of the Tax Justice Network, said, according to Fairfax.
