Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has announced the appointment of Ruth Markland as an Independent Non-Executive.

Ruth is the Senior Independent Director of Standard Chartered PLC and The Sage Group Plc, as well as a member of the Supervisory Board and chair of the remuneration committee at Arcadis NV.

Between 1996 and 2003, Ruth was Managing Partner for Asia at Freshfields, based in Hong Kong, having joined the law firm in 1977. Ruth has also served as chair of the board of trustees of Royal Voluntary Service.

Deloitte’s Independent Non-Executives serve on the main Board of Partners for the UK firm, as well as the firm’s Public Interest Oversight Committee.

Ruth succeeds Dame DeAnne Julius, former member of the Monetary Policy Committee, who joined the firm as an Independent Non-Executive in July 2011. Sir Gerry Grimstone and Sir Michael Peat are continuing into a second term in their roles.

David Cruickshank, Chairman of Deloitte UK, said:

“We welcomed our first Independent Non-Executive to our Board in 2011. Since then they have made a significant contribution to our Board’s deliberations and decision-making, not only in relation to the public interest aspects of our firm’s activities but also more generally on business and strategic issues.

“We are delighted to welcome Ruth to our firm. She brings a wealth of experience in so many areas that will be very valuable to us and to our wider stakeholders.”

Ruth Markland, Independent Non-Executive at Deloitte, said:

“I am delighted to be joining Deloitte, one of the UK’s most successful professional services firms, at a crucial time for the sector.

“Deloitte recognises, and takes very seriously, its obligations around transparency, strong corporate governance and the public interest and I look forward to bringing my experience and insight to the firm.”
