EY selling $16m worth of bitcoin

Ernst-Young-EY

Professional services firm Ernst and Young says it will sell $16 million worth of bitcoin, in what it describes as an Australian-first.

EY said it has been engaged to assist in an international auction of 24,518 bitcoin by an undisclosed vendor, after they were confiscated as the proceeds of crime in 2015.

The firm’s transactions partner Adam Nitkins $10 million team-up designed to plug the skills gap in the cybersecurity space.

He said he expected interest predominately from North America and Europe, and from digital asset investment managers and investment banks.

“With each lot of bitcoin currently valued at more than $1m, we are targeting sophisticated investors who can see the value of investing in a growing digital asset,” he said.

Mr Nitkins said interested parties can express interest via email at project.exchange@eu.ey.com, with expressions of interest closing 7 June 2016.

The digital currency has been embroiled in scandal in recent months with its purported founder, Australian Craig Wright, outing himself as its inventor before apologising and withdrawing.

Bitcoin’s price at 11.30am AEST is $729.98 AUD per bitcoin.
